The 216 Standard Colours

The following chart shows the 216 standard colours, known as the Netscape Palette. These colours can be rendered on most systems, regardless of hard- and software. Only very old hardware, restricted to the 16 VGA colours, will show unpredictable results.

The numbers denote the hexadecimal colour code, the shortened hexadecimal colour code, the absolute RGB-values and the relative (percentage) RGB-values.

using colour codes in stylesheets

In the default view the value of Blue decreases from 100% in 20% steps to 0%. The value of Green similarily decreases inside a block of six columns times six rows, whereas the value of Red decreases from block to block.

Notice that colours with values of Blue being 0% or 20% (columns 5 and 6) are hardly distinguishable anymore. The same applies to colours with values of Green or Red being 0% 0r 20%, e.g. #CC3399 (80%,20%,60%) vs. #CC0099 (80%,0%,60%) for green and #3399CC (20%,60%,80%) vs. #0099CC(0%,60%,80%) for red.

The 216 Standard Colours and their decimal, hexadecimal and percentage values

The arrangement of the colours will be changed according to the sorting method chosen. There are six possibilities to sort the colours leading to new and interesting combinations. Depending on your system you can also choose between display of the chart as a HTML-table, which loads quicker but takes quite some time for rendering, or display of the chart as a picture, which renders quickly but due to its size of approximately 70kB takes some time loading.
