Graphic's Files Formats — Image Comparison Part II
In this second example of image comparison using different file types, a graphic
depicting plain coloured boxes with sharp edges is used.
We see that the JPEG/
JFIF file format produces noticeable
artefacts, blue boxes become slightly blurred even at 100% compression ratio. In
contrast, no estrangement effect whatever is noticed for
PNG and
GIF files.
With respect to file size JPEG/JFIF with its 24bit palette need no consideration
but comparing PNG and GIF images we see that the PNG image is about five times smaller
than the GIF image.
Best choice of file format when using this kind of graphics is thus the PNG
file format.
